One of the richest people in the world Jeff Bezos has a superyacht that is breaking records and, after being stuck in port, the massive $500 yacht is finally ready to sail. The Amazon CEO’s superyacht Koru codenamed Y721 was recently spotted in the North Sea after leaving Rotterdam on 13th February. The million dollars 417-foot vessel’s test run came months after it was originally set to be delivered to the multi-billionaire.
It has a 250-foot support vessel that houses a helipad for the Blue Origin founder. The 59 years old billionaire boat created controversy last year after a report that Dutch officials would have to dismantle the historic Koningshaven Bridge because the 130-foot steel structure wouldn’t allow the vessel and its 229-foot masts to pass through. The yacht took 5 years to complete and now appears ready to begin taking Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, on seafaring voyages.
The massive yacht was too tall to fit through a passageway after being built in a Dutch city. So it needed a historic bridge known as “De Hef” to be dismantled for the boat to fit through. The bridge serves as a national monument after being bombed during World War II. After the public backlash, shipbuilder Oceanco eventually withdrew its request to dismantle the bridge and instead sent the ship off to another shipyard 24 miles away to complete construction.
The yacht’s name is Koru, and it means ‘new beginnings’ in Maori. As one of the largest yachts ever built and owned by one of the wealthiest men in the world, it is likely to attract interest from people all around the world. According to the New York Post, Koru is 417 feet long and has three decks, one of which has a swimming pool. A secondary support vessel that is 250 feet long and has a helipad is required for the Koru. The secondary ship is currently being built by Damen Yachting in the Netherlands. The size of the boat is around half the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Koru is the tallest in the world at 230 feet tall which created the original problems with fitting under the bridge. The massive yacht needs a crew of 40 sailors to operate and can host 18 guests. Koru will cost around $25 million annually to operate, along with $500 million in construction costs.
